Bison Gear Tie-Down Straps | Product Guide

How to choose the right straps:

1. Start with the load

  • Light loads (furniture, bikes, boxes, surfboard, ladder, kayak): use cam buckle straps
→ easier, less risk of over-tightening and damage

  • Heavy (pallets, equipment, building materials): use ratchet straps
    → much stronger, tighter hold

2. Check anchor points

  • If there is tie-down points on the vehicle/trailor
→ use standard ratchet straps with hooks

  • If wrapping around items only (no hooks needed):
→ use an endless ratchet or cam buckle strap

3. Match strength to load

  • Always choose a strap with a working load limit (WLL) higher than the cargo weight

  • For safety: total strap capacity ≥ load weight

4. Consider the cargo type

  • Sharp edges: use edge protectors

  • Delicate surfaces: avoid ratchets or don’t overtighten

  • Loose/bundled items: endless ratchet or Cam Buckle straps works best

How to secure my load:

Cam buckle straps (light–medium loads)

Good for: boxes, furniture, lighter cargo (they rely on hand tension)

Steps:

  1. Place strap over the load.

  2. Feed the loose end through the cam buckle.

  3. Pull tight by hand.

  4. Let the cam lock down (it grips when tension is applied).

Tips:

  • Don’t overtighten (you can’t apply huge force anyway).

  • Keep the strap flat (no twists).

  • Good for fragile items since they won’t crush easily.

Endless/Hookless ratchet straps (looping loads)

(No hooks - strap loops around itself)

Steps:

  1. Wrap strap completely around the load.

  2. Feed end into ratchet.

  3. Pull slack out.

  4. Ratchet tight.

Best for:

  • Bundling items together (pipes, timber, boxes)

  • Securing loads without anchor points

Ratchet straps with hooks (heavier loads)

Good for: machinery, pallets, heavy cargo

Steps:

  1. Hook both ends to solid anchor points.

  2. Feed the loose end through the ratchet spindle.

  3. Pull slack through.

  4. Pump the ratchet handle until tight.

  5. Lock the handle down.

Tips:

  • Tighten until firm, not crushing the load.

  • Close the ratchet fully to lock it.

  • Tie off excess strap so it doesn’t flap.

Bungee Cords (light-duty / secondary securing)

Good for: tarps, loose items, light gear

Steps:
1.Hook one end to a secure anchor point.
2.Stretch the cord over or around the load.
3.Hook the other end to another anchor point.
4.Adjust so there’s even tension holding the item snug.

Tips:

  • Do not use for heavy or critical load securing.

  • Avoid overstretching (risk of snap-back).

  • Keep hooks pointed away from you when stretching.

  • Use multiple cords to spread tension.

  • Replace if frayed, cracked, or damaged.

Important safety rules when using tie down straps

  • Use at least 2 straps for stability.

  • Cross straps if possible (prevents shifting).

  • Check WLL (Working Load Limit) on straps.

  • Protect edges (sharp corners can cut straps).

  • Recheck tension after driving a short distance.
